Kandy

Kandy is only 115 Km from Colombo. Situated 500 meters above from the sea level. Climatically far different to Colombo. This is the second largest city in Srilanka and the capital of hill country with a population of 100.000 people. This was also the last Singhalese capital fell on British hand in 1815.
From olden days Kandy is specially famous for the " Great Kandy Esala Perehara" the duration is about 10 days leads up to full moon in the month of Esala ( July or August) Kand's lake a lovely centerpiece to the town, is artificial and was only created in 1807 by last King.
The focus of Kandy is its lake, with the temple of the tooth on it's north side. The city center is immediately north and west of the lake, the clock tower is a handy reference point.


 

The town center close to Kandy famous lake surrounded by a circle of hills also is a famous shopping center. there is a delightful antique shops, a typical two story market, Gem stone specialists

Kandy's lake , a lovely attraction to the town, is artificial and was only made in 1807 by last Srilankan king Sri Wickrama Rajasingha.
Close to the lake, the temple of the Tooth Relic Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist Temple.
North of the lake you can take a longer stroll around this cool pleasant forest close to the heart of Kandy. There are plenty of huge trees, much bird and insect life and more than a few monkeys.

Botanical Garden

Peradeniya Botanic Garden is six Km out of Kandy towards Colombo. Before the British came this was the Royal Pleasure Garden, today is the largest botanic Garden in Srilanka. Covering 60 hectares and bounded on three sides by a loop the Mahaweli River.
