Dambulla

Dambulla is an importnent cave temple in Srilanka. situated 150 meters above from the sea level. The caves history is thought to date back to around the first century BC. When king Valagambahu driven out of Anuradapura took refuge here. When he regained his throne he had the caves converted into a magnificent rock temple. Later King made further improvements., including King Nissankamalla who had the temple interior gilled, earning it the name of Ran Giri (Golden Rock)

 



There are five separate caves containing 150 Buddha images, the largest cave being over 50 meters long and about six meters high. The first cave you come to has a 15 meters long reclining Buddha. The second cave has many large images of Hindu Gods. all the caves are full of Buddha images in a variety of positions and are decorated in glowing colors with frescos showing scenes from the Buddha life, and events in Singhalese history . The frescos are comparatively modern and not of particular significance.
